WHAT IS A HIP JOINT USS ULTRASOUND SCAN
This examination is completely safe and pain free and it doesn’t affect the functioning of the body.
At Ascroft Medical hip joint examinations are carried out in our clinic by our Dr Joanna Zak who is a surgeon, orthopaedic and trauma specialist with 20 years’ experience.
INDICTIONS FOR EXAMINATION
- Poping hips (Orolani symptom)
- Balancing the joint (Barlow symptom)
- Resistance when moving the lower limb
- Unbalanced or unnatural positioning of the legs
- Asymmetrical folds between your baby’s thighs and buttocks
- Difference in the length of the legs
At Ascroft Medical, thanks to Dr Joana Żak, parents can check the condition of the child’s hip joints. In order for the proper motor development of a child and for them learning to walk, an early diagnosis of abnormalities is very important. Thanks to this examination, if any irregularities are detected, a parent can introduce exercises early enough to improve the condition of the joints. Early diagnosed dysplasia is curable, therefore the first prophylactic examination of the hip joints of infants should be performed in the period from the child’s birth to their 8th week of life.
WHEN TO CARRY OUT THE HIP JOINT ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION
The first examination should be carried out between 6th and 12th week of a baby’s life.
Specialists recommend this preventive examination should be carried out 3 times:
- Between 6th and 12th week of life.
- When babies reach 3month of age.
- When the child is moving/walking independently (especially if a parent is worried about the way their child is moving.)
PREPARATION FOR ULTRASOUND SCAN OF HIP JOINTS.
Parents can rest assured that there is little in the way of preparation that they need to do for their child before an ultrasound examination of hip joints, they just need to ensure that the child’s clothing is not only comfortable and unrestrictive but is also easy to remove for the examination.
An ultrasound examination of hip joints in children is pain free and completely safe. There are no contraindications in its implementation; there are, however, many advantages and indications to perform the examination on specific dates.
We encourage all parents to take preventive measures regarding the health of their child and to contact Ascroft Medical in order to sign up for a consultation and ultrasound examination with our specialist doctor – Dr Joanna Żak.
